My husband is a Star Trek fan. Through the years his mother gave him many Star Trek ornaments. One of those ornaments sparked a family tradition.
The ornament is the Star Trek Shuttlecraft Hallmark Ornament dated 1992. You press a button and you will hear Mr. Spock say “”Shuttlecraft to Enterprise. Shuttlecraft to Enterprise. Spock here. Happy Holidays. Live long. And prosper.” The kids always got a kick out of pressing the button and hearing Spock speak. We didn’t notice how much they liked it until that first year all of them were away at college and upon arriving home for Christmas I noticed that one of the first things they did was to go to the tree and play that message from Spock.
The following year when my husband and I put up the tree, he called the kids and played Spock’s greeting to them. This has become a yearly tradition, and it’s just as much fun now to hear their laughter and comments as it was that very first time. As my youngest son wrote on his facebook page after this year’s Spock greeting, “it’s not Christmas until we hear this ornament”
